‘AI clog’: UK public bodies battle onslaught of chatbot-generated complaints

AnnouncementPolicyNov 8, 2026

UK employment tribunal claims opened between April and June rose 28% year-on-year to 14,000 single-claimant cases, according to government figures. Public bodies and businesses report being swamped by AI-generated correspondence — dubbed "AI clog" — as tools including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini turn routine complaints into lengthy, statute-citing letters. Senior caseworker Hollie Wickens said half the emails her office receives are AI-generated and more time-consuming to handle.
